SIU investigating after man shot by police in Vaughan

An officer discharged his firearm in a confrontation with the driver of a stolen vehicle, SIU says

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred tonight in Vaughan.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 8:15 p.m. on August 13, 2019, York Regional Police (YRP) officers identified a stolen vehicle travelling westbound on Steeles Avenue West, east of Islington Avenue, and attempted to stop it.
  • Shortly after, the vehicle became involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle.
  • There was a confrontation between YRP officers and the driver of the stolen vehicle.
  • One officer discharged his firearm and the man was struck. He was transported to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident. At this time, one subject officer and five witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
