Keep those umbrellas handy, Newmarket. Environment Canada is warning that "significant rainfall" is on the way that could begin as early as this afternoon.

This alert affects Newmarket and Georgina, in northern York Region, and Uxbridge and Beaverton, in northern Durham Region.

The weather agency reports that a few rounds of heavy rainfall will land in southern Ontario over the next few days and continue into the Easter weekend. The April showers are expected to persist on and off until Friday.

Many areas may receive total rainfall amounts of between 25 to 50 mm by late Friday, with additional rain likely to continue ito Saturday.

Although the ground is no longer frozen, generally, the rainfall won’t easily be absorbed and some ponding of water is possible in low-lying areas.

This long weekend’s rain is caused from a series of low pressure systems tracking northest over the Great Lakes from the Southern Plains states.
