An unattended candle was likely the cause of house fire Sunday morning on Gibney Cr in Newmarket.

On arriving on the scene at about 10:22 a.m., the Central York Fire Services (CYFS) fire crew could not see visible smoke or fire conditions from the outside, according to a CYFS incident report. The crew proceeded to the second floor of the house, where they located a fire in a bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished.

An occupant of the home suffered from smoke inhalation in attempting to put out the fire. The occupant was transported to Southlake Regional Health Centre for assessment and treatment and has been released.

CYFS fire crews have cleared the scene and the property has been turned back to the homeowner. The Office of the Fire Marshal did not attend as the fire was contained to the area of origin.

When using candles, CYFS advises:

  • Secure candles in a sturdy holder, in a location where the can't be knocked over
  • Make sure all lit candles are kept out of reach of children and pets
  • Keep all combustible materials, including decorative items, away from lit candles.
  • Always blow out candles before leaving the room.
