An early morning call to York Regional Police about an intoxicated man and a firearm in the Huron Heights neighbourhood drew officers from the force’s emergency response unit and shut down local streets.

York police received an emergency call about 4:19 a.m. today, July 22, with a report of an intoxicated man outside a Waratah Avenue home, Const. Andy Pattenden said. The caller told police a firearm was seen, he added.

“When officers arrived, the man had gone inside the residence,” Pattenden said. “The house was contained by police and officers with the emergency response unit also attended. Shortly before 8 a.m, a man was taken into custody by police.”

The emergency response team is trained to deal with high-risk situations and volatile and potentially dangerous environments, from bomb threats to barricaded persons.

The investigation is ongoing.
