The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Police concluded their 2018 employee fundraising campaign with a $780,575 donation to United Way Greater Toronto, marking 25 consecutive years of giving to the charity and York Region’s largest campaign to date.

“York Region shares a common vision with United Way to create strong, caring and safe communities," said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “This long-standing commitment is supported by Regional Council and driven by our responsibility to help improve the lives of residents in our communities.”

Over the past 25 years, employees at the two organizations have raised close to $6 million for United Way. The York Region and York Regional Police campaign has become the top campaign for United Way in the Region and one of the top two public-sector campaigns in the GTA.

York Region and York Regional Police work closely with United Way agencies daily to help support critical social services throughout the Region. As the demand for these services continues to grow, each dollar raised can lead to life-changing results.

“The continued generosity of our members once again has allowed the United Way to provide people in our community with the social assistance and resources they need,” said York Regional Police Deputy Chief Robertson Rouse. “We are very proud of our ongoing partnership with York Region, which truly makes a difference in our community.”

This year’s United Way campaign highlights included:

  • An employee payroll donation program
  • Spring and holiday markets featuring local vendors and artisans
  • Numerous employee-driven fundraising events and initiatives

“York Region is a great place to work for many reasons; the most important being our people,” said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. “Our employees demonstrate that when we work together toward a common cause, we are able to give back to the community in a very significant way.”

The annual employee campaign is always about more than the amount raised by employees. York Region’s culture of caring is felt by employees early on in their careers at the Region.

“Our campaign for United Way is, and will continue to be, about celebrating our commitment to caring, and to recognizing the incredible support we have in this great organization,” said York Region Commissioner of Corporate Services and United Way Co-Chair Dino Basso. “There is no doubt 2019 will be another successful year focused on the importance of community giving.”

Operating in more than 100 communities in Canada, each United Way raises support locally, directly responding to local needs.

“For 25 years, York Region and York Regional Police have shown their local love – such an incredible display of commitment to community,” said Daniele Zanotti, CEO & President, United Way Greater Toronto. “As United Way’s largest workplace account in York Region, the investment is truly helping to fight poverty. As one of our strongest government partners too, we’re working together to tackle issues like hidden homelessness and a lack of affordable housing.”

The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents and 51,000 businesses with 620,000 employees. More information about the Region’s key service areas is available here.
