York Regional Police are increasing their presence at mosques and other places of worship in the wake of a mass shooting at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand Friday.
“Expect a heightened uniformed police presence around all places of worship across York Region,” stated the force’s Twitter account today.
“Officers are there to assure you feel safe and secure as you continue with your daily routines.”
As many as 49 people were killed and others are being treated for gunshot wounds after a heavily armed gunman entered two mosques during Friday prayers.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada in Vaughan held a special prayer vigil today at its afternoon service at 1:15 p.m.
“The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada strongly condemns the attacks that took place at the Al Noor Mosque & Linwood Mosque in #NewZealand. We're deeply saddened by the horrific attacks & strongly condemn it. We offer our sincerest prayers for the victims & their families,” the organization wrote on Twitter.
