Newmarket, ON — Jacob DiCarlo is back in class after spending a week in Ottawa getting an insider’s view of the Canadian political scene.

The Grade 10 student from Pickering College participated in Forum for Young Canadians, a week-long program that immerses Canadian students in the exciting world of national politics and public affairs through activities and presentations on politics, policy and international trade.

The program offers students ages 15 to 19 the opportunity to learn about government processes, meet decision-makers including MPs and Senators, and to discuss important issues with other young leaders from across Canada. Only 320 students are selected to participate each year.

“I would definitely recommend it,” says Jacob, when speaking about the experience. “It’s good to meet new people and take part in something you’re interested in.”

Jacob couldn’t say that any one thing was his favourite, but a few of the biggest highlights included being in the first Forum group to see the interim House of Commons chamber in West Block, an evening tour of Rideau Hall and having the opportunity to meet numerous Members of Parliament, including Kyle Peterson (Newmarket-Aurora).

Though Jacob is not 100 per cent sure politics will be in his future, he says, “To be fair, I probably have more of an interest now than I did before.”
