Imagine facing the fight of your life with your child’s diagnosis of cancer, wondering how to pay the bills when you lose income to be with your sick child in the hospital, and afford prescriptions not covered by OHIP.

Then, of course, Christmas is coming, but it doesn’t feel like a real Christmas with treatments and hospitalizations. Some friends who typically visit are staying away this year. They don’t know how to handle this illness and don’t want to frighten their kids when their good friend looks so sick with tubes sticking out of them.

For many families, this is the reality of being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness this time of year. It is a sad and lonely time for many, especially children. This is where Shine Through the Rain Foundation helps with its umbrella of protection.

One hundred people impacted by diagnosis will forget about their medical nightmare and just have some fun at Shine Through the Rain Foundation’s Pediatric Christmas Party, Dec. 14 at Cardinal Golf Club, King City. Guests are pediatric patients, siblings, or children with diagnosed parents. For some, it will be their last Christmas together.

Families will enjoy a seasonal dinner, crafts, magician, play areas, DJ and toys delivered by Santa himself. Sponsors include A&B Courier, Healthy Planet, Key West Corporate Video Production, Engage Interactive, Norton McMullen LLP, Walmart and MEC Electric.

Shannon Kroon, executive director of Shine Through the Rain Foundation explains, “This is the most beautiful event. Kids and parents cry tears of joy and are relieved they are not forgotten at Christmas.”

Most people do not know that income is lost to be with a sick child, or when too ill to work, OHIP does not pay for medications taken out of hospital, and not everyone has private health benefits. Yet, the everyday costs of living still must be paid, so it’s easy to fall behind on rent and utilities. It can also be hard to afford groceries and hospital parking costs. Then of course, this time of year, too many find it impossible to afford Christmas.

The Foundation needs your help so families can enjoy Christmas and attend this event for free. Tickets are $180 per family. Any financial donation large or small helps. Please call the Foundation at 905-477-7743 to donate or visit here.

Shine Through the Rain Foundation helps those affected by life-threatening illnesses. Whether through services or funds they provide guidance, support and financial aid to those in need. They help adults, children and families find the silver lining.
