Those waiting to take their road test for their driver’s licence may soon get behind the wheel.

The province announced today, June 9, it will be resuming in-person road tests starting Monday, June 14 at DriveTest centres across Ontario.

In anticipation of a bottleneck of appointment bookings resulting in the backlog of road tests cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, the province will be hiring 167 additional examiners on top of 84 announced in the fall of 2020. There will also be six pop-up DriveTest centres added in the Greater Golden Horseshoe starting in September.

A news release from the Ministry of Transportation estimates the additional hires will cost more than $16 million.

“We will continue to hire more driver examiners while also extending road testing hours and introducing weekend road testing in areas where the backlog is greatest,” stated Caroline Mulroney, minister of transportation, in the news release.

Road test customers and staff will be required to wear face masks inside centres and during road tests, and they will have to complete a screening prior to the test. Examiners will wear PPE, including face shields. They will have sanitizer and seat covers to use while conducting road tests.

Applicants may be required to provide contact information for tracing purposes.

Those who booked appointments only to have them cancelled will not get priority and will have to book a new appointment online.

To book your road test, visit DriveTest.ca. DriveTest.ca is the only official channel for booking a road test.

If the existing appointments are full, you are encouraged to check again later as new road test appointments are added.
