Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution is preparing for electrical work along Newmarket’s train tracks this year in preparation for a two-way, all-day GO Train service.

The utility  will be doing several projects at railway crossings to prepare for the electrification of the GO Train expansion. NT Power said it would need to relocate existing electricity distribution lines across the tracks at several locations.

“Due to the nature of the work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from the equipment and trucks,” NT Power said in a news release. “Every effort to minimize this will be made.”

Metrolinx is working to construct a new electric train fleet and expand the service across the GTA, with two-way, all-day service coming every 15 minutes along the Barrie line. The company has started to make track improvements and construction toward that goal.

"Metrolinx is expanding to serve you better, with more frequent service," NT Power said. "The Barrie GO line expansion will provide easier ways to seamlessly get where you need to go."

The work for NT Power will occur across several crossings over the next few months. Contractor Avertex Utility Solutions is currently working around the railway crossing on Mulock Drive, expected to be complete by the spring.

Black and McDonald Ltd. will be working on the tracks just north of Timothy Street, with work expected to begin in late winter 2023 and finish in the spring.

The crossing at Green Lane East will also see construction from Avertex, to begin in February and finish by spring.

The work stands to limit access to sidewalks, lanes and paths. NT Power said planned hydro outages could occur as wires are relocated, and it will send out notices to any impacted areas.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause,” NT Power said.

The utility will post updates on its website and social media.
