Newmarket's new MP sworn in today

Newmarket-Aurora MP Tony Van Bynen took his oath today at the swearing in ceremony in Ottawa

It's official, newly elected Newmarket-Aurora MP Tony Van Bynen is a member of Parliament.

Friends and family travelled from the Newmarket and Aurora area to attend the swearing in ceremony in Ottawa Friday, Nov. 22, two days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his new cabinet at a Nov. 20 swearing in.

The House is set to resume Dec. 5, when all MPs are expected to be in Parliament to elect the Speaker of the House for the 43rd Parliament.

Before a duly elected member may take his or her seat and vote in the House of Commons, the MP must take an oath or make a solemn affirmation of allegiance and sign the Test Roll, a book with pages headed by the text of the oath.
