Foodland Ontario has recognized Newmarket’s Food Basics for its excellence in displaying provincially grown berries.

The store earned a 2019 Silver Award of Merit in the Foodland Ontario Retailer Awards for its berries display. Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott visited the store Friday, July 16 to present a plaque.

“We know that buying local food supports a strong agri-food sector that sustains us, boosts our economy and helps create good jobs across the province,” Elliott said in a statement. “That’s why our government is committed to promoting food that is grown, harvested and made in Ontario.”

The Foodland Ontario Retailers Awards have run for more than 30 years, recognizing excellent promotion of Ontario foods. There are four tiers of awards, including silver, gold platinum, and an award of excellence, with a variety of different categories.

Food Basics, located at 17725 Yonge St., earned a silver award. It was one of 4,225 entries and was one of the 60 stores recognized this year.
