Newmarket's arts scene in review (19 photos)

Photographer Greg King takes you on a tour of Newmarket's arts and entertainment scene in June, from daring pairings of Italian wine and classical piano to an all-female version of The Odd Couple

Music and student recitals took centre stage in June, as the CDA Dance Academy put on its end-of-year recital June 1 at the Newmarket Theatre.

I caught some of the performances by these talented young people before heading over to Old Town Hall to catch Vlad Soloviev's performance portion of the Town of Newmarket's Daring Pairings.

This iteration of Daring Pairings combined a tasting session featuring Italian wines with a classical piano performance.

On June 2, the Tapestry Chamber Choir performed a concert at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The concert also featured young Harrison Vandikas on violin accompanied by his father, George, on piano.

I attended the final performance of the Newmarket Stage Company's production of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple (female version) at the Legion June 8.

I am familiar with the original and quite liked this version. The overall production was simple and straight-forward, which also endeared it to me after working for a month on some more technically advanced shows in Toronto.

The Borealis Big Band had a concert at Old Town Hall on June 22. They are a high-energy, big band that really jumps.

Local voice teacher Linda Condy held her student recital June 23.  It is always wonderful to hear the next generation of singers.

Finally, the Town of Newmarket put on Music and Poetry Without Borders at Old Town Hall June 29. The event featured local music students and cultural performances.

The cultural performances included First Nation’s songs, traditional Chinese music, Arabic poetry, traditional Arabic music, and Indian music.
