Building on its well-attended violence in elementary school classrooms seminar held in March, the Newmarket Parent Network has organized a free support group for parents of children who have experienced the effects of classroom evacuations and parents of children with behavioural and emotional needs.
It will be led by Kristin Greco, of the Newmarket Psychotherapy Team, and will include four free sessions starting on Monday, May 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave. The sessions continue every Monday until June 10, with the exception of the statutory holiday, Victoria Day, on May 20.
Parents and guardians can attend one, two, three or all four sessions.
The support group was identified as one of the next steps in helping parents to address the issue, network member Shameela Hoosen-Shakeel said.
“This is our chance to connect, to share resources and information, and to receive support from a social worker/psychotherapist and from other parents,” said Hoosen-Shakeel.
The support group is recommended for parents or caregivers of a child in elementary school who is experiencing emotional difficulties in the classroom environment, has experienced or contributed to frightening behaviour in their classroom, and more.
