A Newmarket high school student is among 16 across the region being honoured by the York Region District School Board at its annual Celebrating Student Success awards dinner.

Newmarket student Alicia Nguyen, who attends Sir William Mulock Secondary School, is among the students honoured this year.

Nguyen has been successful academically while working at two part-time jobs to save for university. She switched to remote learning to make her goal possible.

"Alicia pivoted to make changes in her choice of study as she worked to discover where her gift and talents lay," the board website states. "Resilience is marked by her consistent efforts to stay the course and making sure she completes all things necessary to obtain her goal to be accepted to university."

“This event recognizes the accomplishments of students as well as the role of teachers, principals and parents in supporting public education across York Region,” said board chair Allan Tam. “These 16 recipients are representative of the thousands of students who achieve success every day in our board.”

Students of all different ages from all different schools are being recognized.

“These 16 students have dedicated themselves to helping others achieve success or have worked to overcome their own personal challenges to achieve success,” said Louise Sirisko, director of education. “They are the leaders of tomorrow who are making a difference in their communities and classrooms today.”
