Newmarket resident Valerie Hume was recognized as a Canadian Federation of University Woman (CFUW) Notable Woman at a banquet in honour of 100 CFUW Notable Women nominated from across Canada Aug. 17 in Winnipeg at the Canadian Federation of University Women AGM.

This event took place during CFUW’s 100th anniversary and many of the 100 women — all leaders in their communities — dressed in costumes from past decades to help commemorate the occasion.

Valerie joined the Aurora Newmarket Chapter of CFUW in 2002, recognizing the organization as a great social support network for women both locally and internationally, as well as a contributor to the local community.

Still an active member, she has served on an array of club committees, including membership, advocacy, outreach, programs, social and fundraising, to support the many awards the club provides to further young women’s education in the community. She also served as the club’s president and as a board member on the club’s Charitable Trust. Valerie has also held volunteer positions at the provincial and national levels of the organization.

For the past six years, Valerie has been active with a group of autistic young adults helping them operate a coffee stand at the Newmarket Farmers Market on Saturdays from May through October and at other festivals in the Aurora Newmarket area.  Through this effort, these young adults develop employment skills while working in a real job setting.
