Newmarket martial arts event raises $4,000 for women's shelter (4 photos)

Daryoush Jahangir of Satori Uniforms doubled the donations raised at the event at Brad Jones Karate Dojo for Yellow Brick House

A Newmarket martial arts event has raised more than $4,000 for Yellow Brick House, a York Region shelter for abused women and their children in Aurora.

Daryoush Jahangir of Satori Uniforms in Aurora hosted a charitable seminar at Brad Jones Karate Dojo on May 1 that raised $2,000, which he matched with a $2,000 donation. The four-hour event brought martial arts experts from various different practices and clubs to lead classes and workshops.

Jahangir said there was no cost for participants to attend, but voluntary donations were collected.

Along with raising  funds, he said his goal was to “try to help the community and make the people aware of all the shelters and the need.”

Jahangir said giving back is important to him. This is the third time he has organized the seminar fundraiser. In the past, he has also raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research through Pink Belt for the Cure, an initiative he runs in October.

“The unity among community is very important for me,” he said.

He said the event last weekend represents martial artists of different styles, practices and backgrounds coming together for a good cause.

Jahangir said he hopes this event will also inspire others in the community to take action.
