March break fun kicks off at the Newmarket Public Library on Saturday, March 9 and continues right up until March 15 with activities that promise to provide hours of fun, creative play and entertainment.
Many of the programs are free, with others charging a nominal fee or higher if art supplies are required, for instance.
This year, March break runs from March 11 to 15 in York Region’s public and Catholic school boards.
Without further ado, here’s a rundown of the activities offered at the Newmarket Public Library, located at 438 Park Ave., from free on upward:

Chess tournament
Ages 8 and up

Saturday, March 9 and 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Make your moves in a chess competition. Do you like to play chess? Looking for other enthusiasts to have matches with? Join the library's chess tournament over two consecutive Saturdays during March break. Registration required.
LEGO Challenge
Ages 6 and up

Wednesday, March 13 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon
Come out for the LEGO Challenge. Use your imagination to create something unique, or get help from some of the library’s LEGO books. The challenge is to see what ideas you can come up with once you get your hands on the bricks. Registration required.

Wednesday, March 13 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Do you enjoy reading about them and watching their adventures? Join the library for stories and crafts about these fantastic characters. Registration required.
Cardboard box transformations

Thursday, March 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Make your own cool creations out of cardboard boxes. Drop in and have fun making your own creations out of cardboard boxes. There's nothing more fun than turning empty boxes into something unique. This is a drop-in program so no registration is required.
Make your own crochet bracelet

Thursday, March 14 from 2 to 2:45 p.m.
Learn to make a bracelet using a simple crochet chain stitch, the foundation of many crochet projects. Great for beginners. Yarn and hooks supplied. Registration required.
March movie madness: Shaun the Sheep

Friday, March 15 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon
Make a Shaun the Sheep-inspired craft and finish up by watching Shaun the Sheep movie shorts. Registration required.

Green thumb youth gardeners beginner workshop

Julie Hickey of Hello Sunshine Urban Farm will show children the first steps to starting their very own flower and vegetable plants. Participants will plant seeds of their own to take home and grow this spring. Registration required.

Make your own scarf with finger knitting
Ages 7 to 10

Let your fingers do the knitting. Learn how to use your fingers to make a simple scarf that you can take home. No needles required. Registration required.

The juggling ventriloquist
Ages 5 and up

Friday, March 15 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Tim Holland is not only a master ventriloquist, he juggles objects and rides a tall unicycle. You can try to see if Holland is moving his lips during his act, but you’ll probably miss something funny or amazing. Registration required.

Clay with Cathy: Totem pole spoon rest

Enjoy creative hands-on fun. Create a totem pole spoon rest for your spoons. Customize your design and colour it. It will be taken for kiln-firing and available for pick up at the library in approximately one week. Registration required.

Painting workshop with the paint lady
Ages 7 to 10

Tuesday, March 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Learn how to paint from a pro with experienced artist Lisa. Brush up on your technique and colour theory to complete your own masterpiece. During class, mindfulness will be discussed as each step is applied to your creation. No experience necessary. Registration is required.
