The Town of Newmarket and the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce have partnered up once again to get the Newmarket community thinking, shopping and supporting local this holiday season. In efforts to continue to support local business and the local economy, the town and chamber are reminding everyone of the importance of supporting local businesses during the holidays and beyond.
This year, the winter “Choose Newmarket” campaign promises to be bigger and better, thanks to support through the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. We’re grateful for the partnership,” says Chris Emanuel, President & CEO of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. “It means that not only are we showcasing our terrific area businesses, but we’re also able to directly support the business community through our efforts.”
The chamber and the town are launching a number of initiatives under the Choose Newmarket umbrella, including a contest, printed magazine, videos, online gift guides and business highlights. Newmarket residents will hear the "Choose Local" message on local radio stations and see reminders on York Region buses, in the newspaper, online and while supporting local in their favourite businesses. “We want to reach as many people as possible with the Choose Newmarket message,” says Emanuel.
“In your hunt for that perfect gift or that unique item for the person who has everything, there is no doubt a local Newmarket business has what you are looking for,” says Mayor John Taylor. “Following pandemic lockdowns over the past almost two years, local small businesses could use our support. That’s why the Town is excited to continue our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce on the Choose Local initiative. Using the Choose Local shopping directory makes it easy to find hundreds of homegrown businesses for all your holiday shopping.”
Local businesses serve the community in many ways including sponsoring sports teams, donating to important local causes, employing local residents, and purchasing from other Newmarket-based businesses.
While there is a lot of joy to be had just from supporting local businesses, to add an extra layer of encouragement residents are invited to participate in a Choose Local contest for a chance to win one of three $500 shopping sprees in support of local businesses.
Two easy ways to enter:
1. Take a photo showing how you support that Newmarket business. Get creative and have fun with it! Post a photo of your purchased product, service or activity on Instagram or Twitter. Be sure to tag @TownofNewmarket and the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce and use the hashtag #ChooseNewmarket. Remember to also tag the business to inspire others to also support your local favourites.

2. Visit newmarket.ca/chooselocalcontest and complete a short survey about how you’re supporting local. Share how and why you are Choosing Local this holiday season to be entered to win.
Each social post or survey is one entry. Participants may enter multiple times, with separate posts over the course of the contest.
