Newmarket, Aurora women mark Women's Day with solidarity march

Members of the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket marched in downtown Newmarket to show support for empowering women around the world

Members of the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket took the theme of the 2019 International Women’s Day campaign to heart today.

After learning about a local initiative that empowers women and girls in Tanzania and helps them stay healthy and in school, the group took to the streets to show their solidarity with their African sisters.

The women marched along Main Street to the Water Street bridge to sing O Canada in solidarity with their African sisters.

The IWD theme, Balance for Better, encourages collective action — globally and at the grassroots level — to better our world.

International Women's Day is not only a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, but it’s a day that calls for action on gender equity.

The CFUW event included a presentation by Lynn Bird about Mount Albert charity ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams and the challenges girls and women in Tanzania and other developing nations face during their menstrual cycle.
