York Region and Long Term Care, a unit of CUPE Local 905, representing workers in York Region’s Public Health and Paramedic Services departments launched the York Health Matters campaign Nov. 7, 2019, to highlight the high standard of public health services they deliver.

“The work our members perform in delivering public health services in York Region touches every aspect of our community,” said Doug Sheppard, York Region and Long Term Care unit chairperson. “We know public health services are important to our community and we know that the standard to which our members rise in delivering those services matters. Because York Health Matters.”

The York Health Matters campaign launch included the first screening of a video highlighting the services the unit members working in Public Health and Paramedic Services are responsible for delivering to residents.

During the launch celebration, the chairperson congratulated the members for their dedication and commitment, which contributed to York Region being awarded the Gold Certification for Excellence, Innovation and Wellness by Excellence Canada.

York Region’s Public Health unit is the only health unit in Ontario to be recognized with the gold certification.

“York Region public health workers and paramedics have set the standard for care. Communities thrive when care, compassion and expertise are at the core of Public Health. That’s what York Region and Long Term Care unit members deliver,” Sheppard said.

York Region registered practical nurse Crystal Cook said, “In York Region, we put residents first. Our commitment to serving our community is at the core of the public health services we deliver”.

With thousands of new Canadians, growing families, empty-nesters and young professionals moving to York Region each year, it is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada with unique needs.

Public health workers provide the services that alleviate pressure on the health-care system, provide support to families in every stage of life and help make this community a safe place to call home, because York Health Matters.
