Markham Trustee Juanita Nathan is the new chair of the York Region District School Board.

Nathan, who previously served as vice-chair and was re-elected for her third term in October 2018, replaces Corrie McBain, who continues to sit on the board as trustee for Richmond Hill wards 1, 2 and 4.

"We have accomplished much, but we know there is more work to do," said Nathan in her Dec. 3 message. "We look forward to working alongside staff members, families, students and our community partners to ensure we are providing safe, caring and inclusive learning environments that enable our students to be successful."

The trustees will continue to focus on the priorities in its strategic plan, she said, which are: fostering well-being and mental health; building collaborative relationships; empowering ethical leadership; and championing equity and inclusivity.

The new vice-chair is Georgina Trustee Cynthia Cordova, and the budget committee chair is Markham/Vaughan Trustee David Sherman.

The three officers for the public school board were elected at its inaugural meeting Monday, Dec. 2 for a one-year term.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with more than 127,000 students in 180 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools.
