March Break at the library offers hands-on, creative programs

With March Break fast approaching, it’s time to think about what to do when the kids are home for an entire week

With March Break fast approaching, it’s time to think about what to do when the kids are home for an entire week. If you want to avoid hearing the dreaded words “I’m bored” or get the kids away from their mobile devices for a while, then you may want to consider some of the programs being offered at Newmarket Public Library.  

“We’ve scheduled a mixture of programs ideal for young children and families,” says Susan Hoffman, head of the library’s children’s services department. “But most of them have one thing in common: they’re hands-on programs designed to get kids thinking, engage their creativity and, of course, provide lots of fun.”

Here are some of the programs happening at the library during March Break: 

The Juggling Ventriloquist
Friday, March 15, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Tim Holland is not only a master ventriloquist; he juggles objects and rides a unicycle. You can try to see if Tim is moving his lips during his act, but you’ll probably miss something funny or amazing. Takes place in the library’s Multipurpose Room for ages five and up. Fee: $5 per person.

Painting Workshop with the Paint Lady
Tueday, March 12, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Learn to paint your masterpiece with Lisa, The Paint Lady. She’ll teach you the basics of painting, including brush technique and colour theory. No experience necessary. Takes place in the library’s Program Room for ages seven to 10. Fee: $25/child.

Let’s Celebrate Superheroes
Wednesday, March 13, 2 to 3 p.m.

Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Panther. Are you a fan of superheroes? Do you enjoy reading about them and watching their adventures? Join us for stories and crafts about these fantastic characters. Takes place in the library’s Story Room for ages seven to nine. Fee: FREE.

Green Thumb Youth Gardeners Beginner Workshop
Friday, March 15, choose from two times 2 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Julie Hickey of Hello Sunshine Urban Farm will show children the first steps to starting their very own flower and vegetable plants. Participants will plant seeds of their own to take home and grow this spring. Takes place in the library’s Multipurpose Room for ages seven to 12. Fee: $2.

Clay With Cathy: Coiled Bird Trivet Hot Plate
Thursday, March 14, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Cathy Gifford is a master of clay, and her programs are always a hit with children. She’s back to show you how to create a coiled bird trivet hot plate, ideal for putting hot drinks on. Takes place in the library’s Multipurpose Room for ages six and up. Fee: $15 per child.
