Local drive wants your baseball gloves, cleats, bats for disadvantaged children

Newmarket resident hosts donation drive tomorrow to help Nicaraguan children play their national sport

You may recognize Newmarket resident Chris Howie from the Lions Park community outdoor hockey rink he founded, floods, shovels, and generally maintains during the winter season.

But now that warming temperatures have made the ice pad disappear, Howie has turned his attention to giving back another way: helping disadvantaged boys and girls in Nicaragua aged six and up play their national sport of baseball.

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 13 at 4 p.m., you are invited to drop off baseball equipment, including gloves, cleats, bats, and anything extra you may have related to the sport at the Newmarket Soccer Centre, 621 Newpark Blvd.

Howie runs GTA North Baseball Academy at the centre and will be available to accept the donations.

On a trip to Nicarauga, Howie saw local children playing catch with rolled up socks and vowed to collect supplies and ship them to the young baseball fans.

If you’d like more information about how you can donate, message Chris Howie on Facebook.
