LGBTQ2 coffee nights expand to northern York Region

Pflag York Region added a second coffee night at Aurora Public Library beginning Dec. 10. The coffee nights will run the second Monday of every month after that to make it easier for those living in the region's northern municipalities to attend.

Beginning in December, Pflag York Region will double up on its support services to members of the LGBTQ2 community with a new coffee night held the second Monday of every month at Aurora Public Library. This additional meetup will make it easier for those living in the region’s northern municipalities to attend.

“The expansion of Pflag’s coffee night to Aurora means our most vulnerable in York Region are able to access powerful peer-to-peer support on a more frequent basis,” Pflag York Region president Michael Blackburn said in a media release. “We are working to build support and social community spaces in areas where they are hard to find, and we are ecstatic to contribute to a thriving LGBTQ2 community across the region.”

Whether you’re a LGBTQ2 person who is “coming out” to your family and friends, or a parent who has just learned that your child is gay or trans, Pflag volunteers are available to help, the website states. The coffee nights will continue on the fourth Wednesday of every month (except December) in Richmond Hill, 10909 Yonge St., Unit 203, starting at 7:15 p.m.

Over the past eight months, the support, resource and education network has experienced unprecedented growth in the demand for its peer-to-peer support services at its monthly coffee night in Richmond Hill. That is why it has partnered with Aurora Public Library to bring a second coffee night to the region.

The coffee nights are a safe space where members of the LGBTQ2 community, their friends, family or allies can seek support, ask questions, or share concerns about sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. It is also a place where new friendships can be made.

“The monthly coffee night will be an inclusive and welcoming space where members of our LGBTQ2 community can connect and engage, find camaraderie and support, and celebrate Pflag's vibrancy and growth,” Aurora Public Library community collaboration manager Reccia Mandelcorn said.

The first coffee night at Aurora Public Library will be held Monday, Dec. 10 at 7:15 p.m. in the Magna Room, 15145 Yonge St., and on the second Monday every month after that.
