As children, it’s fun to jump in puddles and run carefree in the rain. For adults, though, sometimes that excitement turns to worries about potential flooding.

The Town of Newmarket wants to bring back your enjoyment of rain with a unique rain-themed park proposed for Philmore Hamilton Park, located across from Glen Cedar Public School at Wayne Drive and Howard Road.

On Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Old Town Hall (460 Botsford St.), you can view concept drawings and provide your feedback, as well as delve into your self-conscience to fetch pleasurable experiences you have with rain and nature.

A number of interactive stations will help you to explore memories, music and art to visualize the planned project.

The Philmore Hamilton Park project is the first joint initiative between the town’s engineering and recreation and culture departments. Construction could begin in summer 2020, led by consultants Ascentia, Aquafor Beech Ltd. and Schollen & Company Inc.

“The iWonder framework involves looking at engineering projects through a new lens,” the Town’s engineering services director Rachel Prudhomme said. “It is a different way of engaging our residents so that we can go beyond achieving our engineering objective which, in this case, is flood control.

“Results of the iWonder event will help make the land useful for social, cultural and recreational purposes, thereby greatly increasing residents' future enjoyment of the property.”

The all-ages event features the following four components:

  • Entry boards with engineering drawings showing concept designs for the property;
  • A multi-sensory night experience about rain;
  • A hands-on day experience with activities to bring out the fun and playful side of rain, along with the creative side of people and;
  • The Rain Story, where participants share thoughts about rain and provide feedback to be used for the design and future programming of the park.

You just never know. The iWonder event may leave you Singin’ in the Rain again.
