Learn the stories behind the books at The Writers’ Community of York Region's (WCYR) 4th annual The Bookshelf Book Fair.

The event is set for Saturday, May 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall, and features local authors, book readings, and a Kids Zone.

You will have a chance to rub elbows with local talent, have a cup of coffee and listen to authors read their favourite passages.

Participate in the free scavenger hunt, dollar-draws, spot prizes, and go home with a whole new to-be-read pile.

Draw winners will be announced at 12:45 p.m.

"The Bookshelf is a great place for readers to shop local and find that one-of-a-kind book they can't get at big box stores," said Pat Flewwelling, owner of Myth Hawker Travelling Bookstore. "Who knows, maybe you'll buy a debut novel, first edition from the next JK Rowling or Stephen King, and in a couple of years, you'll have ultimate bragging rights at your book club."

Kim Chatel, the author of Rainbow Sheep, said The Bookshelf allows her the chance to connect with readers.

"I love watching kids light up when they get a new book,” Chatel said.

"Events like this are the lifeblood of an indie writer," author Cameron S. Currie said. "The Bookshelf staff are hard-working and helpful. It gets better every year!"

The WCYR encourages local authors in all genres and at all levels. Through monthly meetings and workshops, the group offers support, education, networking and the opportunity to get out and hang with other authors and industry professionals for a few soul-satisfying hours.

The WCYR also supports events that promote the value of writers, such as The Bookshelf, where readers get a chance to experience and discover homegrown talent.
