Some in Newmarket are crying in their beer after Arch Brewing Co. announced it is closing up its Pony Drive storefront location at the end of day Jan. 21.
Today is your last chance to say goodbye to husband-and-wife brewers, Sue and Bill King, and return an empty keg if you have one.
“Very sad to see you go, but I am wishing you both all the best in your future endeavours ... health and happiness,” patron Larry Wood wrote on the brewery’s Facebook page.
In its closure notice, Arch owners said the four-year-old brewery is “leaping into 2020 with some exciting, albeit bittersweet, news”.
“We have loved brewing exceptional beer on a small scale in a boutique space,” they said. “Despite our love of everything tiny, we are taking some massive leaps this year, including the volume of beer we brew.”
The couple said they plan to return to their original business model of contract brewing, and partnering with a brewery that has larger equipment. They have sold the 110 Pony Dr. property to a real estate company, and its contents to another brewery.
Stay tuned in the coming months for what’s next, the Kings told NewmarketToday.
“We feel blessed to have met such a fantastic group of friends through this venture,” they said to friends on social media. “It is amazing how much we laughed and how many solutions were worked through simply by talking over beers. Thank you.”
Patron Nick Hodowsky said he was sad to see them go, but glad to hear that they’ll still be making “great beer”.
“Thanks for your support of the local home-brew community, and making my favourite porter! Good luck!” he wrote.
Arch Brewing Co. Flip Flop porter fan, Darren Crooks, wished the brewers well as they scale up their business.
“I am not to be able to pop by and taste what's on tap, but I am glad that you'll be brewing your excellent suds on a larger scale. Much success to you,” he wrote.
