'It hurts right through my flesh, bones, heart and soul,' grieving mother says

On the same day York Regional Police lay impaired-related charges against a 23-year-old Newmarket man, a family reaches out on Facebook for justice for their 5-year-old daughter, who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash

On the same day York Regional Police announced a dozen charges against a Newmarket man in a four-vehicle August crash that left a five-year-old girl dead, the youngster’s mother, Abby Abulencia Gomez, wrote on her Facebook page that “it hurts right through my flesh, bones, heart and soul…”

The grieving Scarborough mother on Dec. 11 also pleaded for justice for her daughter, Lux Peyton Gomez, and asked that anyone with information about the tragic accident contact York police.

York police have arrested and charged Kamau Davis-Locke, 23, of Newmarket with 12 impaired-related criminal driving offences, including impaired driving cause death and criminal negligence cause death.

The charges come after a four-month investigation into the collision that sent all five members of the Abulencia Gomez family to hospital with various injuries, as well as three other people from two vehicles involved in the crash.

Davis-Locke was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Jan. 24, 2019.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said complex investigations of this nature often take time due to a number of factors.

"Investigators have to map out the entire collision scene and process all of that, numerous witnesses had to be interviewed, especially in this particular case, and toxicology reports take quite a bit of time to get back," Const. Pattenden said.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign was set up for the Abulencia-Gomez family on Aug. 21 by Abby Abulencia Gomez’s sister, Tess Abulencia Cameron. So far, $1,770 of its $15,000 goal has been raised.

Abulencia Cameron writes on the online fundraising website that her sister’s family was on their way to a trip to an area beach when they were involved in the multi-vehicle collision in King Township early Saturday morning on Aug. 4.

“My five-year old niece, Lux, was critically injured and was taken to hospital fighting for her life. The two other siblings (brothers, aged three and 11 years old), thankfully, escaped without major injuries. However, my sister, Abby, and brother-in-law, Mark, both suffered serious injuries, with Mark being in critical condition.

“Unfortunately, after a few days of a very tough battle trying hang on to her life, my niece, Lux, succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Multiple surgeries for my sister and brother-in-law is just the very beginning of the healing process for the entire family and there is a long and difficult road ahead to try to put the pieces back together.”

“Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers as this ordeal will forever change their lives.”
