The Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket (CFUW) is anxious to know exactly what is at the bus stop.

For over a decade, CFUW Aurora/Newmarket has encouraged young writers to take risks, hone their skills, and share their stories in the annual writing contest.

For the 2021 contest, stories must begin with “Imagine finding it at the bus stop.” Young authors have until Feb. 22 tell their tales in a maximum 750 words.

Last year was the question, “When did it all go wrong?” Over 120 York Region students in grade 6 to 12 submitted stories that answered that question.

“The irony of that question was not lost on us as we were finishing the contest just as the COVID-19 pandemic began last spring,” says Anne Marie Devine, Chair of the CFUW Writing Contest Committee. “We had to adjust our final judging sessions to Zoom meetings and cancel our awards reception.”

“This year the whole contest is running during the pandemic. We are hoping that students now working at home during lockdown will be looking for a way to keep busy and consider entering the contest.”

Over $1,200 in prize money is available to student finalists and winners.

There are three levels of judging for the stories to determine seven finalists in an elementary and secondary category. Final level of judging determines first, second and third-place winners.

Entry fee is $5 for elementary students (grades 6 to 8) and $10 for secondary students (grades 9 to 12).

The CFUW is involved in different initiatives that support community outreach and education, such as this contest, a joint Stay-in-School program with York Region CAS as well as awarding scholarships to graduating students.
