Hip hop meets powwow at Splash of Culture

Newmarket's annual cultural extravaganza brings Hip Hop Hoop Dance, Strings Across the Sky and Selena Vega to the stage at Riverwalk Commons Aug. 29

Urban hip hop music meets First Nations powwow at the Town of Newmarket's Splash of Culture at Riverwalk Commons Aug. 29.

This year's event, from 8 to 10 p.m., features Hip Hop Hoop Dance, Strings Across the Sky and Selena Vega.

Hip Hop Hoop Dance is a collaboration between Terrence Littletent, a world champion hoop dancer from the Kawacatoose Cree Nation, and Chancz Perry, an inter-disciplinary and Afro-Caribbean-Canadian hip hop artist.

Strings Across the Sky is an award-winning music education program featuring Indigenous youth performing drumming, singing, violin and fiddle-playing, while Selena Vega, a Sacred Heart Catholic High School student, is a Newmarket musician, singer and songwriter.

The evening will begin with a traditional land acknowledgement by Anishinaabe grandmother Kim Wheatley, a speaker, singer, drummer and Anishinaabe cultural consultant who offers traditional teachings to Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
