  • New rental and affordable housing is expected to get another push forward as council is asked to put its stamp on various procedural matters related to the 4.4-acre development now in the pre-construction phase at 175 Deerfield Rd., in what’s known as Newmarket’s urban centre near Yonge Street and Davis Drive. The housing project will bring 500 new units to town, including a mix of townhomes, condos and rental apartment buildings. Today, council is asked to approve incentives for developer The Rose Corporation that are expected to secure two of the buildings as high-density rentals, with 19 apartments in one building and 13 in the other designated as affordable. Also, in exchange for increased height and density of the new residential development, the developer will contribute $339,000 toward the creation of such things as a park near the area for residents’ enjoyment.

  • A staff recommendation to put a hold on development along Old Main Street, and schedule a public meeting for stakeholders, including the community. The area consists of the properties on Old Main Street bounded by Bexhill Road to the southwest, St John’s Cemetery to the north-west, and Main Street Bypass to the northeast and southeast.

  • York University will present an update on the work at the new Markham Centre Campus in York Region. The Town of Newmarket last year supported the $25-million funding agreement between York University and the Regional Municipality of York. The campus will provide about 4,000 students with access to more than 20 degree programs. There’s a chance for a partnership between York University and the Town of Newmarket to help meet local needs.

  • A resident will share concerns about the safety of Queen Street, near the east end of Parkview Crescent. Council was asked to review the May 2014 In Road Safety Review Report conducted by IBI Group prior to Monday’s meeting.
