Here are some (pretty silly) Halloween costume ideas for Newmarket residents

Our pals at BradfordToday inspired us to come up with some Halloween costume ideas specifically for our local readers. We hope you enjoy these Newmarket-themed costumes that you can quickly make yourself at home.

If you haven’t even begun to think about your costume for this year’s Halloween party, don’t sweat it.

Here at NewmarketToday, we have dreamed up some unique and, shall we say, Newmarket-specific costume ideas that could see you walking away with the top prize of the night.

Here are some (pretty silly) ideas you may want to consider, with tongue fully in cheek.

Innovative clown

Show your support for Newmarket’s hub of innovation and ideas, NewMakeIt, with the emphasis on the ‘It’ because it is Halloween, after all.

We suggest wearing your most trendy, hipster outfit, hairspray your hair until it stands on end, apply makeup to your face in a clownish fashion, and tie a few red balloons around your waist. Stephen King would be proud.

Statue of Liberty

If you want to show your support or disdain — this costume could go either way — for the Town’s purchase of Mulock Farm to build a New York-style Central Park for residents, then dressing up as the Statue of Liberty is sure to get the party going.

The costume can be pulled together quickly: Paint a cardboard box green and decorate it with envelopes that say ‘tax levy’. Put a crown on your head and carry a plastic flame, to light the way forward for the next 30 years. For an award-winning touch, have a tourist wearing an "I heart Newmarket" t-shirt, sunglasses, a Tilley hat and cargo pants follow you around all night asking to have his picture taken with you.

A bollard

Residents are evenly divided on whether they believe the flexible, on-street poles known as bollards are effective at slowing down traffic, according to our poll at NewmarketToday and the comments on our Facebook page.

As a driver, whether you love bollards or hate them, let’s hope the party guests will slow down when they see you and take the time to say hello.

We suggest you start with an all-black outfit. Purchase some yellow caution tape and loosely wrap it around your clothing.

Fountain

Everyone loves hanging out at Riverwalk Commons, but since the weather’s turned chilly, it’s time to find other places to gather indoors.

Be that welcome reminder of summertime fun in the great outdoors by creating a costume that depicts the Tim Hortons Water Feature.

Start with a cardboard box that’s painted blue. Take a quick trip to your local Timmy’s and purchase about 20 coffees. Drink the coffee, save the cups. Then, working carefully with the scissors, cut open the cups and secure them with masking tape all over the box. Slick your hair back with some gel for the wet look.

Donny and Marie Osmond

Let's celebrate Newmarket for being a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. Show off your civic pride for the Town’s friendly small-town charm and big city amenities, such as the renowned Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Finding a partner is your first order of business for this costume. Then, one person wears the outfit they wore to the Magna Hoedown, and the other dresses up like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.
