NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF NEWMARKET

With the spookiest holiday of the year quickly approaching, Safety Cone Sam and Belle the Bike remind families to keep the following safety tips in mind this Halloween when venturing out for some festive fun:

  • Slow down when driving on Halloween. Children are excited and may cross the road without notice.
  • Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk with a group or a trusted adult on Halloween night and organize a common meeting spot in case anyone gets lost.
  • Don’t criss-cross back and forth across the street. Work your way up one side of the street, cross at the crosswalk and then start on the other side of the street.
  • Try to wear costumes that are reflective or bright in colour. This will increase your visibility to those driving at night.
  • Use caution when crossing the street on Halloween night and remember to use designated crosswalks when possible.
  • Clear sidewalks of leaves, extension cords or any other items that could obstruct pathways for trick-or-treaters.
  • Use extra caution if trick-or-treating near construction zones.
  • Have an emergency plan. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 and what to do in case they become lost or need help when trick-or-treating.
