Four local businesses want to put Newmarket on the map as a leader in health and wellness.

“Newmarket is the leading town in York Region for wellness, and with everything that you’ve done to get people outside and enjoying life, it seemed like a natural fit,” Honsberger Physio+ owner Robyn Honsberger told council Monday.

Honsberger, along with Timeless Harmony Salon & Spa owner Katie Gilligan, asked the town for its support of a free event they have planned for September as part of a global movement known as World Wellness Weekend.

Now in its third year, the wellness weekend has grown by leaps and bounds with more than 2,000 local health and wellness businesses in more than 100 countries offering such things as workshops, workouts, relaxing massages, spa services, dance classes, and more, in their respective communities.

Together with Dr. Kitty Shang of Bayview Naturopathic Wellness, and Karen Spencer, a master linguistic programming practitioner and owner of It can be Different, the business owners will present an educational session focused on living one’s best life prescription-free at the Newmarket Public Library from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

It will be the first time Newmarket participates in the movement and the town’s elected officials said they are on board with their support and will help promote the event.

Event organizers also have the support of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, Snapd Newmarket and the Aurora Seniors’ Centre.

“The whole point here is to empower our constituents of Newmarket to live a healthy and active lifestyle,” Honsberger said. “We’re looking to give back to the residents, as well as to educate them on how to be active from a mind, body and soul perspective.”

The hope, Honsberger added, is that next month’s wellness offering will become an annual event held every September in Newmarket.

Here’s what participants will learn at the event billed as Health is Wealth:

  • The healing power of essential oils
  • Five simple tips to help your body and mind heal
  • Life shouldn’t hurt: learn how to prevent injury and get back to being active; the importance of mobility and building fundamental strength for longevity
  • Learn how the key to a new body and new life sits in your unconscious mind

Health is Wealth takes place Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Newmarket Public Library, multi-purpose room, 438 Park Ave.

Space is limited, so email [email protected] or call Katie Gilligan at 905-235-4019 to reserve a spot.
