The stage for celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 is set.

After witnessing dynamic women like United States Vice-President Kamala Harris, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman speak and demonstrate truth to power, the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket (CFUW A/N) will continue to honour the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This year’s theme for CFUW A/N International Women’s Day is “Choose to Include."

It is on this theme that Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux, guest speaker for the women’s club event, will speak. She is the first Indigenous Chair for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada for Lakehead University, and she continues to develop pathways for reconciliation across Canada.

Dr. Wesley-Esquimaux has dedicated her life to building bridges of understanding between peoples. She sees endless merit in bringing people from diverse cultures, ages, and backgrounds together to engage in practical dialogue and applied research initiatives. She is deeply committed to public education and active youth engagement from all cultures and backgrounds.

“Women have persevered. We know we are leaders, we are carriers of culture, of song, of hope, and of incredible persistence. We are becoming all those things we were once denied: teachers, academics, chiefs, engineers, architects, and doctors. We will continue to become, and we will not stop now or ever. We were here yesterday, we are here today, and we will be here tomorrow,” says Dr. Wesley-Esquimaux, a member and resident of the Chippewa of Georgina Island First Nation.

Lynn Bird, Advocacy and Outreach Chair for CFUW, is the organizer for this year’s virtual event on March 8 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. that is open to all. To request an e-ticket to the event, send an email to [email protected].
