A hard-to-detect fire that was smoldering within the walls of a Holgate Circle home was found and extinguished by Central York Fire Services firefighters Jan. 26.

The homeowner called the fire department at about 11:17 p.m. Saturday after smelling smoke that appeared to be coming from the basement of the two-storey, detached home in the Bayview Avenue and St. John’s Sideroad area of Newmarket.

A smoldering fire is difficult to detect as there is no smoke or fire visible, a fire service incident report stated.

Four fire crews, York Regional Police and York Region Paramedic Service were at the scene. No injuries were reported.

A fire services staff investigation found the fire to be accidental in nature. The homeowner is working with the insurance provider on required repairs to the home.
