The cause of an early morning fire Sunday at a vacant, new home under construction in Newmarket is under investigation.

Six Central York Fire Services (CYFS) crews responded to the fire on Rita's Avenue April 21 at 3:15 a.m., observing flames coming through the roof of the house.

Damage is estimated at $400,000, according to Deputy Chief Rocco Volpe.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal was notified and attended the scene to lead the investigation, with assistance from CYFS Fire Prevention and York Regional Police. After the interior investigation was completed and evidence secured, the home was turned over to the builder, according to the incident report.

No injuries occurred in the fire that was declared under control at 4:34 a.m.
