Local police officers will help children learn the joys of fishing during the annual Fairy Lake Urban Family Fish Out hosted by the Newmarket Optimist Club.

The derby will take place on Monday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fairy Lake.

This is a free event in which anyone can participate in. Participants will have access to fishing equipment and bait, and each angler will be provided with a free barbecued hotdog and drink, as well as giveaways.

Officers from York Regional Police will also be on hand to help the young anglers reel in a big one.

The event is sponsored by the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting recreational fishing.

It is also supported by Fishing Forever, the Police Association of Ontario, Canadian Tire, the Newmarket Optimist Club, the Ministry of Natural Resources (Aurora District), Aurora Bass Masters, and the York Regional Police Association.

Fishing Forever chairperson Bob Izumi is an avid supporter of recreational fishing for both the young and the young at heart.

“I love to create opportunities for children and families to go fishing,” said Izumi. “Fishing is one of the very best ways for parents and other adults to establish productive and healthy relationships with children.”
