The venerable Newmarket Stage Company is already sending out a casting call for its first play of 2020, the ambitious production of Steel Magnolias, slated to hit Stage 426 at the Newmarket Legion on Feb. 20.

The casting call for this Robert Harling classic play is Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in Room Three at the Lions Community Centre Hall, on Doug Duncan Drive.

This play will run over six nights starting Feb. 20, 21, 22  and 27, 28 and 29, at 8 p.m., and three matinees, Feb. 22, 27 and 29 at 2 p.m. Six females of varying age are required. These ladies form a multigenerational tight group, who discuss all secrets and gossip in the shelter of the local beauty salon, and as the name implies, show their toughness, as well as grace and dignity, through true adversity. 

Characters needed include: 

  • Truvy, aged 40-50, owner of Salon;
  • Annelee, aged 19-25, assistant;
  • Shelby, 25ish, pretty girl, full of life;
  • M’Lynn, 50ish, Shelby’s mother and protector;
  • Chairee, 60ish, widow of town mayor, Grande Dame type;
  • And, Ouster, 60ish, wealthy eccentric, loud but lovable.

All actors will be expected to have a Southern accent; help will be available. It will be directed by the very talented Teri Hallett and produced by seasoned veteran Sue Meacock. If you require more information, e-mail: [email protected] or visit newmarketstageco.ca.

And just a reminder, the Newmarket Stage Company is currently wrapping up final rehearsals for its upcoming hilarious comedy, The Housekeeper, which hits Stage 426 at the Newmarket Legion this Thursday, Sept., 5 — a play not to be missed!

Floundering after the death of his mother, a pompous, self-styled writer employs a housekeeper. When the housekeeper arrives, he is taken aback by her flippant attitude. The contrast in personalities has super funny and unexpected results!

Evening performances at 8 p.m. are: Sept.  5, 6, 7 and 12, 13 and 14. Matinees, starting at 2 p.m., are on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Thursday, Sept. 12.
