A 12-year-old boy suffered minor injuries April 24 after being hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Doubletree Lane and Clearmeadow Boulevard, a York Regional Police spokesperson said.

The boy was struck at about 3:40 p.m. in the Yonge Street and Mulock Drive neighbourhood of Newmarket and a driver has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian, police said.

Several local residents posted on a Facebook group to share their concern for the child, as well as for the safety of pedestrians.

Jill Moore, who lives in the area, said that she called the local school and emailed its principal and vice-principal so they could have crisis workers available today.

“I understand there were many kids who witnessed this horrible accident,” Moore wrote. “I included Councillor Kelly Broome in the email because I think the community needs to take decisive action to make the roads around the school safer for our kids. Rarely does anyone come to a complete stop at Clearmeadow and Doubletree and, today, a young man could have been killed.”
