59th Lions festival fills downtown Newmarket with music

Hundreds of musicians of all ages from across York Region are taking part in the week-long event presented by the Newmarket Lions Club

Hundreds of musicians, youth and adults, from across York Region are taking part in the Newmarket Lions Music Festival at the Old Town Hall this week.

This is the 59th year of the festival hosted by the Newmarket Lions Clubs, which provides quality adjudication for all performers in piano, vocal, strings, harp, brass, woodwind and percussion.

The young performers also compete for scholarships that allow them to further develop their skills.

The move to Old Town Hall allows two concurrent performances, in the main level Serpa Gallery and upstairs in the Snapd Auditorium.  Along with extended hours, this has shortened what used to be a three-week event to one week.

A select number of participants will be invited to perform at the Festival of Stars Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Old Town Hall.

The scholarships awards will be handed out at this event.
