2 more residents die with COVID-19, bringing Newmarket death toll to 45

The deaths of two more Newmarket residents with COVID-19 are being reported today, bringing the pandemic death toll to 45.

An 81-year-old woman passed away Thursday, April 1 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket with a COVID-19 case acquired by close contact, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

A 67-year-old man passed away Tuesday, April 13 at Southlake Regional Health Centre with a case acquired by close contact confirmed March 31, the day after symptom onset, he said.

According to York Region's public dashboard, two additional variant deaths have occurred in Newmarket, bringing the total to four today.

The majority of deaths are men (67 per cent) aged 80 and over (58 per cent).

Of the 45 COVID-19 related fatalities, the cases were acquired: 31 in an institution; eight by close contact; five by local transmission, and one in a workplace.

The additional COVID-19 related death being reported today is a 56-year-old Richmond Hill man, who passed away on Tuesday, April 13 at Markham Stouffville Hospital in Markham, Casey said.

To date, 579 York Region residents have died with COVID-19, 32 of which are variant cases. The majority of deaths, at 62 per cent, are linked to institutional outbreaks, and are residents aged 80 and older (65 per cent).
