As the local chapter of 100 Women Who Care continues to grow, so does the amount of money its members donate quarterly to grassroots non-profit groups in our communities.

More than $153,000 has been donated since it was founded more than three years ago. Most recently, TLC - The Life Centre was selected by members as the recipient of $12,750. The Newmarket-based charity provides education and support to pregnant women, as well as parenting and couples counselling.

"There are so many local grassroot charities and they are all in need of funds, as so many have lost funding support," said local founder and president Laurie Brakeboer. "(TLC) was thrilled to receive these funds and it is going to make a huge difference to the girls and women who will be assisted."

Brakeboer was inspired in August 2015 to launch the local chapter of the nationwide 100 Women Who Care organization, and it has continued to grow in membership and impact since then.

The chapter meets four times annually, with each member contributing $100 toward a local charity — now accumulating to total donations of more than $12,000 each to four non-profit organizations nominated and chosen by the members from Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury.

100 Women Who Care - Central York Region always welcomes new members. The next meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Aurora Legion on Industrial Parkway North.
