Re: Remember This? Carter, Luesby pillars of historical community

What an honour to be flagged by The History Hound!

I am also happy to be so noted as Richard MacLeod's mentor. That, too, is an honour.

I might add my own inspiration, the person who passed her fascination with Newmarket’s history and that of some of her family (who she was proud to tell had been rebels in 1837) to her students was Miss Evelyn Denne. She was my grades 6 & 7 teacher at Stuart Scott Public School.

It was Miss D. who showed me that much of the colourful history that we were learning centred on landmarks and buildings still available to us in those years to be explored. The Eagle Street pioneer cemetery provided endless fascination, although it was wreck. As a Grade 7 project, I undertook a letter-writing campaign to The Era & Express, town council, etc. and eventually some interest was sparked and there was a clean-up.

Keep up the good work on The History Hound. There are lots of people out there with the history bug — they just need a nudge, as you are proving.

Terry Carter, Newmarket
