Re: What are GMOs and why should you have concerns about them?Feb. 14, 2021.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are crops developed using precise plant breeding tools to achieve benefits such as resistance to certain insects and diseases, herbicide tolerance, enhanced nutritional value and reduced food waste.

It’s important to remember that all food in Canada must live up to high standards set by Health Canada for health and safety. When it comes to GMOs, these crops have been grown in Canada for more than 25 years and enjoy a remarkable safety record. Studies over the past two decades show that foods from genetically modified ingredients are as safe and nutritious as any other.

Canadian farmers are constantly striving to grow healthy, safe crops and ensure their land is productive for future crops and generations.

Furthermore, farmers who grow genetically improved varieties of corn, canola, soybeans and other crops realize numerous benefits such as increased yields, improved pest control and environmental sustainability. These benefits mean that farmers can grow more food on less land while leaving valuable green spaces that are used by wildlife intact.

Genetically modified crops allow farmers to control weeds more easily, reducing the need to till or plow their fields. This protects the soil from erosion and stores significant amounts of carbon in the soil, helping in the fight against climate change.

Canadian consumers should feel confident that they have access to one of the safest food supplies in the world and that the technologies used to grow our food have been thoroughly assessed for safety.
