Resident of Eagle Terrace is Newmarket's first COVID-19 death

York Region marked the largest daily spike in confirmed cases today — 68 — with Newmarket's total cases now reaching 54

An 84-year-old Newmarket man is among six additional COVID-19 related deaths in York Region, as the number of cases spiked in the largest daily increase to date — 68 new cases — to total 765 today, April 13.

The man was a resident of Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home, where a COVID-19 outbreak is underway. He died at Southlake Regional Health yesterday, two days after testing positive for the virus.

Also, Southlake is reporting tonight that two other deaths have occurred, bringing its total COVID-19 related deaths to five. No further details are provided.

York Region public health is now reporting a total of 35 COVID-19 deaths.

A 79-year-old man passed away Sunday at Markhaven Home for Seniors, marking the 10th COVID-19 related death at the facility where an outbreak was declared March 22.

Two residents of Villa Leonardo Gambin long-term care in Woodbridge, where a COVID-19 outbreak has also been declared, have also died. A 90-year-old Vaughan man, who tested positive April 2, and a 92-year-old Vaughan man, who tested postive April 10 two days after the onset of symptoms, both passed away today.  

A 56-year-old Vaughan man died Saturday, April 11 in a residence after the onset of symptoms March 27. COVID-19 was confirmed following his death on April 12. The cause of transmission is unknown.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Vaughan has now reached 12.

Richmond Hill marked its second COVID-19 related death when a 77-year-old man died Tuesday, April 7 at Mackenzie Health, six days after testing positive. The cause of exposure is not known.

Newmarket's total cases now number 54, with six additional cases confirmed today. Nine cases are resolved, and five individuals are hospitalized.

East Gwillimbury has jumped to 14 confirmed cases, with five more added today.

Vaughan continues to be the hot spot for the virus, with an additional 32 confirmed cases today bringing its total to 366.

Institutional outbreaks increased rapidly last week to 16, including at 11 long-term care facilities — in Newmarket at Southlake Residential Care Village, Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home and Mackenzie Place Long-Term Care, and in Aurora at Chartwell Aurora Long-Term Care Residence.

Kerry's Place Autism Services in Pefferlaw is among the five community care settings with COVID-19 outbreaks. 

Of the 765 cases in York Region:

  • 366 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 32 today), 12 deaths;
  • 176 in Markham (+ 15 today), 18 deaths;
  • 92 in Richmond Hill (+ 4 today), 2 deaths;
  • 54 in Newmarket (+ 6 today), 1 death; 
  • 31 in Aurora (+ 3 today), 1 death;
  • 14 in East Gwillimbury (+ 5 today);
  • 13 in King, (+1 today), 1 death;
  • 11 in Whitchurch-Stouffville;
  • 7 in Georgina (+ 3 today).

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region increased from 44 to 45 today, with 23 cases remaining critically ill in ICU. 

Resolved cases in the region now tally 98, which is about 13 per cent of the total 765 cases.

As of 4:30 p.m. April 13, Southlake Regional Health Centre is reporting seven COVID-19 patients in ICU, and five COVID-19 patients in an inpatient unit. Nine patients are under investigation for COVID-19.

The total number of infected health-care workers, which may include physicians, nurses and paramedics, remains at 51 today: seven in Newmarket; one in Aurora, three in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in Richmond Hill, 14 in Vaughan; and 21 in Markham.
