On May 19, the Province of Ontario lifted its restrictions on some outdoor recreational amenities. As a result, the Town has begun to gradually reopen a number of outdoor recreational amenities for residents to use. As of May 22, the following are open:
- Newmarket Dog Park (Global Pet Foods Dog Park presented by snapd)
- Some tennis courts

Drew Doak Park

Charles Van Zant Park

Haskett Park
-
Keith Davis Tennis Centre

Remaining tennis courts will be opened by May 29

“I am pleased that we are able to reopen some outdoor recreational amenities for the community to use.” says Mayor John Taylor. “We are taking a cautious approach to reopening with the health and safety of our community as our number one priority. I want to thank our community for your continued commitment to following the public health guidelines, you have done an exceptional job. Please remember that the success of this reopening phase is dependent on your actions. We need to be strong, and extra vigilant. Stay at least six feet (two meters) away from people outside of your household, do not gather in groups larger than five and continue to wash your hands frequently.”
Residents are reminded that amenities open to the public are for recreational use only. Organized sports or league play is not permitted. Activities like having a picnic, playing catch, frisbee and kicking a soccer ball are allowed in open spaces as long as everyone follows public health guidelines:
- Stays at least 6ft. / 2m. away from people outside of their immediate household
- Adheres to the Province of Ontario’s emergency orders around social gatherings (currently, no more than five (5) people).
Over the next two weeks, the Town will gradually reopen more recreational outdoor amenities. Staff will be performing necessary maintenance work to ensure these areas are safe for use, in addition to posting updated signage. Please adhere to the rules at each location. Newmarket’s by-law officers and education ambassadors will continue to patrol areas around Town with an education approach first.
The Town will continue to monitor the changing COVID-19 landscape, seek guidance from the Province of Ontario and assess each reopening phase carefully with the health and safety of our community a top priority. Thank you for your patience as the Town works through each reopening phase.
