Newmarket's food bank knows it can count on the Newmarket Lions Club when in need.
The local club donated $5,000 today to the Newmarket Food Pantry knowing that demand has increased significantly with the hardships the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing to many residents.
"During this pandemic, the Newmarket Food Pantry has seen a significant increase in the number of people needing their services and, at the same time, there has been a decrease in food donations, while expenses have increased due to their added cost of delivering the food to their clients," Lions club president Sylvia Brock said.
"The Newmarket Lions Club made the donation to help the food pantry continue to deliver their necessary service."
The Newmarket Lions have supported of the food bank since it first opened in 1988, she added.
Poulin said that during the pandemic, the best way to help is by donating money.
“People are so stressed at grocery stores right now, they don’t need to be worrying about getting a bag for the food pantry,” she said. “They don’t have to come in, they can make a donation online at CanadaHelps.org, even if it’s $5, $10 or $15. We can make that money go further because we buy wholesale."
