About 70 individuals are in self-isolation as a result of school-related COVID-19 cases in York Region, according to the medical officer of health.

"This number, given the large number of schools in York Region, is a relatively small number," said Dr. Karim Kurji in a video update today.

There are no known cases of COVID-19 as a result of transmission in a school, he said, confirming that 10 schools in southern York Region remain under surveillance as a result of cases in students and staff acquired elsewhere.

On confirmation of a COVID case, Kurji said public health investigators move rapidly to determine the source of acquisition by assessing potential close contacts, including classmates, teachers and staff in a cohort, at recess, at before and after school programs, on buses, and at home.
